When it comes to education reform, there seem to be more words written about the topic than actual actions taken. For years, Americans have lamented how problematic some public schools are due to a lack of funding and organization. For Betsy DeVos, the newest Secretary of Education for the United States of America, the problem isn’t funding — it’s a lack of choice for parents. Betsy DeVos is a Michigan-born Republican who has spent the better part of the past 30 years working to push education reform to the center of the conservative platform. After decades of hard work, DeVos finally has a chance to render change that lasts far beyond her time in office. Let’s take a long look at what Betsy DeVos plans to do during her work in the Trump Administration.
As a dedicated reformer, Betsy DeVos has always known that she has a greater mission ahead of her. Now, after being confirmed to lead the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos will finally have the mandate she needs in order to start acting on her beliefs. As we mentioned above, for the past thirty years, Betsy DeVos has been gamely working on spreading the concept of education reform to the conservative world. Alongside her husband Dick DeVos, heir to the Amway enterprise, Betsy has become something of an icon among her conservative followers. In a world that has grown increasingly disillusioned with education reform, DeVos has become something of a shining beacon. What exactly is it that DeVos is planning to do?
While Betsy DeVos lacks experience working in government, she has been instrumental in supporting GOP representatives all throughout the Midwest and particularly in Michigan. She’s established her clout and her ability to render change on a political level and now DeVos is going to use that experience to try and get school choice passed into the public forum. School choice insists that public education funds be spread around to more than just public schools. Betsy DeVos believes that parents should not be penalized for choosing to send their children to a private school or to a charter school. In fact, Betsy DeVos believes that public funds should be made available to these specific institutions so that they, too, can get the money needed to continue operating at a high level.
Fundamentally, Betsy DeVos believes in the idea of choice and that is the building block upon which every other conservative idea is built. With Betsy DeVos in the White House and President Trump giving her the thumbs up, Betsy DeVos will be working hard over the next couple of years to sell the public on the idea of school choice. With a lot of hard work, DeVos might change education as we know it.
