They took over the management of the university newspaper and made it their own. The Phoenix New Times has been one of the best weeklies when it comes to writing informative and well-investigated stories especially that touch on the rights of the people.
Michael Lacey has projected their work in the media as defenders of the oppressed, mostly the small communities in Arizona which have been placed under pressure by government agents who think that they can oppress the people without the law catching up with them. Lacey and larking have also combined human rights protection with philanthropy.
After they won a court case where they were granted a settlement of $3.75 million, they set up a philanthropic foundation known as the Frontera Fund. Currently, there is a new case in court. In this case, the two journalists are accused of supporting illegal prostitution through a site they owned known as backpage.com. Although they had sold the site, they have been accused of committing crimes while they were managing it.
Right now the case is going on, but Lacey and Larkin have described it as another case that will be decided based on the First Amendment. They believe they will be exonerated once the case is heard. They have won other similar cases that they face and this is going to be just one of those that they have won.
