While OSI Industries is undoubtedly one of the largest food providers in the global market, that was not always the case. The company, which now operates in over 17 countries, continues to grow and modernize its product. But it once came from a much more humble beginning. The story of OSI Industries begins with Otto Kolschowsky, a German immigrant living in Chicago, Illinois at the start of the 20th century. The city was known at the time as the “Hog Butcher for the World.” For anyone hoping to open a retail service centering around meat production, Chicago was a great place to start. It was in this environment that Kolschowsky opened a small shop that doubled as a meat market and a butcher shop in 1909.
Ten years later, Kolschowsky had grown successful enough to expand into wholesale food production. His company was also able to open a second shop. Partnership With McDonalds
In 1955, Ray Kroc entered into an agreement with Otto & Sons to supply McDonalds with all of the fresh ground beef that the restaurant needed. From that point on, Otto & Sons began to grow beyond the family business model. As they transitioned into OSI Industries in 1975, the main concern became delivering consistently affordable products that could be transported over long distances to their customers.
Changing Production Needs
OSI Industries opened an entire facility dedicated to keeping up with McDonald’s production needs. In 1977, they opened their first production facility outside of Chicago with the debut of their West Jordan, Utah facility. They began international food production in 1978 with the the company’s debut in Germany.
By the 1980s, the company ranked high on Forbes list of largest private companies and had achieved sales of $6.1 million. In 2018, the company merged with Turi Foods. This merger is expected to bring the expertise of Australian poultry farming and processing that Turi Food is known for to the global market thanks to OSI Industries’ knowledge, scale and reach.
